PRESS STATEMENT

Press Statement

The United Ulama Council of South Africa, a body representing most Muslim Theological formations in South Africa, expresses its extreme anguish and shock at the tragedy unfolding in the United States.

The catastrophic devastation of human life is certainly repugnant to all peace-loving members of the human race. The murder, pain and anguish of innocent civilians anywhere in the world is our pain, their distress is our distress. Amidst the unspeakable agony and suffering of the people of America, amidst the smothering rubble of devastation, we must not forget that the plight of Americans today was indeed the plight of Nicaragua, Sudan, Iraq and Afghanistan yesterday. History has shown that the wanton destruction of human life leads to corresponding degrees of brutality and inhumanity. It is indeed a great pity that ordinary civilians become victims of political guile and duplicity. They are the innocent pawns who pay the price of embargos, sanctions, murder and pillage on behalf of their political masters.

Our heartfelt condolence and sympathy go out to all victims of aggression and tyranny, be they American, Sudanese or Palestinian. Violence against innocent civilians cannot be condoned. We must use this sad tragedy to reassess international political dogma that serves only to perpetuate a cycle of brute violence.

We appeal to the media and politicians not to implicate individuals or countries, on untested evidence. One injustice cannot repay another!

We pray that sanity prevails and the Almighty guides us to appropriate conduct.

 A.H. Gabier,

President
