  • A Picture of Human Suffering
    10 April 2003
The news agencies have provided us with pictures of bombing raids they called spectacular and stunning. They have discussed the brutal force of the coalition army.  They even gave insight through interviews with British and American soldiers of the ruthless way they are taught to think.  They discussed at length military tactics and repeatedly told us of areas that had been secured for the umpteenth time.  They continuously speculated about the whereabouts of Saddam while showing the bombing and attacking of every densely populated civilian residential area....What has however been very scarcely portrayed is the true picture of human suffering.  The pain and agony of the ordinary man in the street. The suffering of the women.  The maiming of pure fresh faced young children....
  • A Jumu'ah Message from Jamiatul Ulama Transvaal
    10 April 2003
We are well aware of the situation in
Iraq . To say that it is tragic is an understatement. The continuous and continuing bombing raids and incursions that form part of the illegal invasion of Iraq , by the coalition of the unjust oppressors is wreaking havoc in the life of every innocent individual of Iraq .
  • Islamic Significance of Iraq
    10 April 2003
Long before Islâm took over and continued the splendour of
Iraq , it was already known for its high level of civilisation, culture and historic significance. Under Islâmic rule, Iraq continued this tradition and reached the pinnacle of its civilisation in all fields: religious, intellectual, cultural, political and economical.

  • Iraqi Relief
    27 March 2003
The continuing bombing raids inflicted by the ‘Coalition of the Willing’, is wreaking havoc everyday in Iraq where: thousands civilians are being displaced into make-shift camps; supplies of basic necessities such as food and medicines are cut; infrastructure for social amenities lies ruined and in disrepair; women, the elderly and children bear most of the brunt; and no end is in sight but continued mass suffering … Are we ready to make a difference to our brethren in the Land of Islamic Heritage?

  • Condemnation of the USA and her ‘Coalition of the Willing’ Partners
    20 March 2003

It seemed that nothing, absolutely nothing, could have stopped the
USA from pursuing war on Iraq . The stalemate in the UN Security Council, the millions who have protested and picketed, the ensuing diplomatic furores, the forecast of the amount of pain and suffering on Iraqi civilians, the massive human catastrophe… despite all of these, unilateralism has prevailed.
  • Persian Gulf War II: What we can Do as Muslim
    20 March 2003

Given the present set of circumstances, is there a sense of helplessness in the rank and file of Muslims? All we manage doing is vilifying and deriding
America and her allies. Will this change the situation? Obviously it will not. If you resist the designs of America by defending yourself, you are branded a terrorist and legislation in about all countries of the world is in place to negate that “irritation.” What other option do we have? Do we realise the nature of what is being communicated to you? Does it behove Muslims to express such sentiments? It is simply indicative of our weakness. It lays bare our relationship with Allah. It reveals our lack of belief in the sunnah of Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu 'alayhi wasallam.
  • An Important Notice to Parents on Exemptions from School Requirements
    5th March 2003
The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa (Act No. 108 of 1996 Section 31) guarantees the right to freedom of conscience and religion. School policy has therefore to be consistent with the principles enshrined in the constitution. However, it is vital for parents to maintain good manners and adopt the correct procedure when seeking exemption from any school requirement that infringes on our religious beliefs.
  • Statement on American Threats to the Middle East Region
    24 February 2003
...The extremist policy of the American administration is aimed at breaking up the unity of the region and widening the gap of disagreement between the people and their rulers, by pressurizing some governments to change their curriculum, close the religious institutions and tighten the grip on the Islamic charity associations and organizations and adopt the secular model which contradicts with the moral values of our people. This will lead to clashes between the Muslim masses and their governments...
  • JUT's Statement on Martin Stointech's Negative Remarks on Muslims
    20 February 2003
...We regard his comments as hugely misleading, immensely provocative and highly inaccurate. Such comments have the potential of fuelling Islamaphobia in South Africa, creating artificial ideological barriers between Muslims and people of other faiths, leading to a hostile environment towards Muslims in general...
  • The Cricket Mania
    20 February 2003
...Are we enchanted and bewitched by ‘sport’ though it has become synonymous with violence, drugs, fornication, gambling and match-fixing? Do we adore sport heroes; even though they are disconnected from the real world, from real jobs and real lives? Do we now judge the worth of individuals based solely on how they perform on the field, instead of looking at their characters, values and beliefs?...
  • The Looming War against Iraq
    3 February 2003
    Iraq
is country with a rich history. It was on the banks of the Tigris and Euphrates - the two great rivers of ancient times - that the earliest known civilisations arose. The lands that make up modern Iraq, formerly known as Mesopotamia - the 'Land between the Rivers' which is between present day Basra and Baghdad – that gave birth to the first urban civilisation more than 5000 years ago. It is the birthplace of the father of all religions, Ibrahim Alayhis Salâm. The Iraqis invented the irrigation system, they founded modern mathematics and astronomy, and developed the first known written language. [more]
  • Anti-Terrorism Bill and its Consequences
    3 February 2003
In the wake of 9/11, the United States of America and its consorts have embarked on a crusade to secure unhindered, unhampered dominance of the world. One of the tools used to create such political subordination is the “Anti Terrorism Bill” contrived by the USA and subsequently imposed upon the rest of the world. The strongest motivation for the Bill has come, not surprisingly from the Israel lobby. For the passed 5/6 yrs America has pressurized all countries to pass the bill.  The “Anti Terror Bill” (ATB) has given countries like Russia and India the legitimate right to butcher innocent civilians in Chechnya and Kashmir . Similarly, the bombings in East Africa and Bali have created the ideal political environment to cast the ATB web around these countries.

  • Restoration of Soweto Masjid, Dlamini
    1 November 2002
The Jamiatul Ulama Transvaal in conjunction with Soweto Muslim Association hereby appeal to all Muslims to contribute towards the restoration of the Masjid. We have always been sensitive to the needs of fellow Muslims, we are confident that you will meet our expectations, thus acquiring the pleasure of Allah.
  • UUCSA's Press Statement on the Soweto Bombings
    30 October 2002
We condemn in the strongest possible terms the explosions that rocked the tranquility of Soweto. Such dastardly acts lend to civil unrest and retard the spirit of national reconciliation. A spirit that has been a distinctive characteristic of our young democracy and one vigorously espoused by our leaders. To attack civilian targets is indeed despicable. No peace loving human being can ever contemplate to bomb a place of worship (in this case a Muslim one – Mosque) of whatever denomination....
  • Be Steadfast: Soweto Masjid Bombing
    30 October 2002
Understandably Muslims may feel enraged and angered but cannot be dictated to by their feelings and emotions. Let us exercise patience, restraint and conduct ourselves in a calm and rational manner. This does in any way suggest that we have adopted a defeatist mentality.

  • On the World Summit on Sustainable Development
    16 August 2002
There is a role for everyone to play in sustainable development and not only for large corporations and government having decision-making powers. Although the government can only attend the Summit's proper sector, the Non Governmental Sector (NGO) of which the Jamiatul Ulama Transvaal forms part of, needs to be involved. Government concedes this and that it is why it has allowed parallel events to take place at NASREC. The JUT has acquired space at this forum and will present to those attending an Islamic perspective on the issues up for discussion. Pamphlets and booklets will be made available articulating our understanding of the debate.
  • Women's Day Message: The Gender Crusade
    8 August 2002
The position of women has been the subject of intense debate throughout the corridors of time. Many of the intellectual traditions of the West were to some extent influenced by early Greek philosophers like Aristotle, and Plato. Aristotle argued that women were not full human beings; they were by nature deficient, untrustworthy and of a sub human status. His views on the nature of women formed the basis of early Christian doctrine of the Catholic Church, where women were regarded as the cause of the downfall of man and the source of all evil.

  • You as the Employer
    30 April 2002
The 1st of May is officially commemorated as Workers Day, it is a public acknowledgement of the importance and dignity of workers. As Muslims, we need to be the forerunners in displaying justice and compassion when dealing with those in our employ. The Holy Qur’ân states “It is WE Who divide among them their livelihood in the life of this world, and We exalt some of them above others in rank, so that some of them may command work from the others” (43:32

  • "Caution: There is Another anti-Islamic Site"
    11 December 2001

Why issuing an alert letter is precisely the wrong thing to do?

    By Khalid Baig

The alert letters keep coming. Beware here is the latest anti-Islamic site. Then a URL so you can verify that it is indeed as described. Then a passionate request to tell all the Muslims in the world about it.
    Sincere. Misguided. Counter-productive.

  • The Largest Refugee Group in the World
    5 October 2001
Afghanistan is the land of ruins, broken bridges, closed canals, empty roads, and cold chimneys. With no food, or friend, their solemn cries echo through the deep ravines of Afghanistan..., cries that beckon the Muslim Ummah to respond with compassion and kindness. Homeless and helpless their wrinkled faces reflect contours of pain and sorrow. Armed only with faith in Allâh they patiently bear unimaginable poverty and destitution...
...Are you going to respond to the pleas and cries of the millions of refugees? Are you prepared to extend a handsome loan unto the cause of Allâh? Are you prepared to purchase Jannah in lieu of a generous contribution towards alleviating the plight of the refugees?

  • The Baneful Plague of Racism! An Islamic Perspective
    24 August 2001
The history of man throughout the corridors of time is littered with the rubble of tyranny, oppression, and racial discrimination. Racism is a baneful plague that fosters hatred, arrogance, and vengeance Entire nations were enslaved, vanquished, or oppressed simply because of their poverty, lineage, colour, religion, or nationality. Palestine is a classic example of how a ‘Chosen Nation’ appropriates human integrity in the name of its alleged ‘god-given’ superiority....
