Statement by Muslims of
South Africa
27 February 2007, JISS
Centre, Johannesburg
We, South African
organisations
representing the Muslims
of this country, declare
that:
• We believe that no
single country has the
unilateral right to
define terrorism or to
coerce other countries
to support their
viewpoint;
• We condemn the Bush
Administration for
listing some South
Africans as “terrorists”
and for threatening to
list more South Africans
without due process and
without any
consideration for the
need to provide
substantial
and credible evidence;
• We support the stance
of the South African
government in its
insistence
on securing credible
evidence for such
listings and for
subscribing to the
principle of
administrative justice
before acting against
any of its citizens;
• We further reject with
contempt the decision by
the Bush Administration
and some of its allies
for imposing travel
restrictions on South
African
religious and community
leaders, academics,
activists and their
families;
• We condemn the Bush
Administration for
detaining prisoners of
war indefinitely and
without fair trial in
violation of the Geneva
Conventions, such as
those in Guantanamo Bay,
and call for their
immediate and
unconditional release;
• We are strongly
opposed to unlawful acts
of rendition of
so-called
suspected “terrorists”;
• We proclaim that, as
believing Muslims, we
are opposed to all acts
of injustice and acts of
indiscriminate violence
against innocent
civilians perpetrated
either by individuals,
organisations or states;
• We advocate that any
effort aimed at curbing
unconstitutional or
criminal activities by
individuals or
organisations should not
undermine our hard-won
fundamental human rights
and infringe on our
civil liberties;
• We reserve the right
to express solidarity
with all peoples living
under the yoke of
colonialism, national
oppression and foreign
occupation and to
support such peoples in
their struggles for
national liberation and
freedom.
• We urge all countries,
including our own, to
uphold the rule of law
when dealing with the
rights of their citizens
and others.
Muslims, as South
African patriots, have
contributed actively to
the struggle for
national liberation and
against apartheid. We
commit ourselves to
continue with this
tradition and to work
with our fellow
compatriots in order to:
struggle for the
socio-economic
development of our
nation;
fight poverty, crime
and HIV/AIDS ;
intensify the campaign
for the moral
regeneration of all our
people; and
to promote respect,
tolerance and peace
among all South
Africans.

Something to think about
We’re always
told that world markets
jump when the America
sneezes.
Judging from yesterday’s
developments, the
American market jumps
when China sniffs. Is it
any wonder that current
playmakers in world
politics fear
that they could be
upstaged from their
position of dominance,
through different
avenues?

The Prophet
Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa Sallam
used to offer night prayers
till his feet became
swollen. Somebody said to
him, "Allah has forgiven
you, your faults of the past
and those to follow." On
that, he said, "Shouldn't I
be a thankful slave (of
Allah)?" (Bukhari)

Q and A |
Question:
As you know homosexuality is
allowed by most Countries
and some also allow same sex
marriages. What is the
Islamic view point on this? |
Answer:
Homosexuality is Haraam
in Islam. Allah Ta'aala
says: "It is
He who has created you from
one being and made from it,
it's spouse so that he may
seek comfort from her". This
verse is explicit that a
female was
created for the benefit of
the male and vice versa. The
people of Sodom were
punished for this very
reason of
homosexuality/sodomy.
Bisexuality is no different
from homosexuality in that
the man still fulfills his
desires by a man, with the
only difference that
sometimes with a female as
well (or vice versa). |
|
|
Question:
Does Islam allow
Homosexuality/ bisexuality? |
Answer:
Islam does not allow
homosexuality/bisexuality at
all. It abhors it totally.
There is no place for it in
Islam.
And Allah Ta'aala knows
best.

Summarized Jumu’ah Bayaan:
|
|
Sacredness of Masjid
Al-Aqsa |
Allah Ta'aala says:
Glory to (Allah) Who did
take His Servant for
Journey by night from
the Sacred Mosque to the
Farthest Mosque whose
precincts We did Bless
in order that We might
show him some of Our
Signs: for He is the one
Who heareth and seeth
(all things). (Al-Isra’il)
|
In the Qur’ān there are
many verses implying
that the Land of
Palestine, the city of
Jerusalem, the entire
environs are set apart
as holy and blessed, as
they have received
special divine
blessings. The land
around Masjid Al-Aqsa is
referred to 70 times as
the blessed land in the
Qur’ān amongst which are
the following verses:
(Sūrah Bani Isra’īl/Surat
al-Isra’, 17:1), (Sūrah
al-Maidah, 5:23), (Sūrah
at-Tīn, 95:1-4), (Sūrah
al-Mu’minūn, 23:50), (Sūrah
Aal-Imran 3: 37), (Sūrah
Aal-Imran 3:5), ( Sūrah
Maryam 19:16)
|
The Traditions of the
Prophet Sallallahu
‘alayhi wa sallam also
refer to the sacredness
of Masjid Al-Aqsa for
various reasons. Among
them are:
|
It was the first
Qiblah of Muslims
See tafsir of the
following verse: “The
fools among the people
will say: "What hath
turned them from the
Qiblah to which they
were used?" (2:142)
|
It was the second
Masjid to be established
on Earth
Abu Dharr reported that
he asked the Prophet
(peace be upon him), "O
Prophet of Allah, which
mosque was built first
on earth?" The Prophet
(peace be upon him)
replied, "The Sacred
Mosque of Makkah." Abu
Dharr again asked,
"Which was next?" The
Prophet (peace be upon
him) said, "The Al-Aqsa
Mosque." "How long was
the period between
them?" Abu Dharr asked.
The Prophet (peace be
upon him) said, "Forty
years. Apart from these,
offer your prayers
anywhere when it is time
to pray, although
excellence is in praying
in these mosques." (Bukhari)
/(See also Hadīth: Abū
Dhar -Sahīh Muslim)
|
The virtues of
praying in Masjid Al
Aqsa are great.
Maimunah bint Sa’d asked
the Prophet Sallallâhu
'alayhi wasallam, ‘Tell
us about Bait al-Maqdis.’
He said, ‘It is the land
of gathering and
resurrection. Go there
and offer prayer. Your
prayer will be
considered as a thousand
prayers.’ (Abū Dawūd)
|
Jabir (radiyallahu
`anhu) reports that the
Messenger of Allah said:
"Prayer in the
inviolable mosque [in
Makkah] is like 100,000
prayers [elsewhere]. And
prayers in my mosque [in
Madinah] is like one
thousand prayers
[elsewhere]. And a
prayer in Bait al-Maqdis
[in Jerusalem] is like
five hundred prayers
[elsewhere]. This is
related by alBaihaqi,
and as-Sayuti says it is
hasan.
|
It is one of only
three Masjids where
specific travel could be
made to.
Sa'id bin Al-Musayyib
reported from Abu
Hurairah that the
Prophet (peace be upon
him) said, "You should
not undertake a special
journey to visit any
place other than the
three Mosques: the
Sacred Mosque of Makkah,
this mosque of mine, and
Al-Aqsa Mosque (of
Jerusalem)." This is
reported by Bukhari,
Muslim, and Abu Daw'ud.
Abu Huraira narrated:
The Prophet said, "Do
not set out on a journey
except for three
Mosques, i.e.
Al-Masjid-Al-Haram, the
Mosque of Allah's
Apostle, and the Mosque
of Al-Aqsa (Mosque of
Jerusalem)." (Bukhari)
|
Performing Hajj or
Umrah from Masjid
Al-Aqsa is meritorious
Umm Salamah, Umm al-Mu’minin,
relates that the Prophet
said, “If anyone puts on
ihram for Hajj or ‘Umrah
from Masjid al-Aqsa and
then proceeds to the
sacred Masjid, his
former and latter sins
will be forgiven, or he
will be guaranteed
Paradise”. Sunan Abu
Dawud.
|
There is virtue in
donating to Masjid
Al-Aqsa
‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar
relates, I asked the
Prophet, “Apostle of
Allah, tell us the legal
injunction about
(visiting) Bayt al-Maqdis
(Jerusalem).” The
Apostle of Allah said,
“Go and pray there. If
you cannot visit it and
pray there, then send
some oil to be used in
the lamps”. Sahih al-Bukhari
|
It’s land is
Blessed
Zaid ibn Thabit reports
that the Prophet said,
“How blessed is
al-Sham”! The companions
around asked: “Why is
that”? The Messenger
replied, “I see the
angels of Allah
spreading their wings
over al-Sham”. Ibn
‘Abbas added, “And the
Prophets lived in it.
There is not a single
inch in al-Quds
(Jerusalem) where a
Prophet has not prayed
or an angel not stood”.
Tirmidhi and Imam Ahmad
|
Among other virtues
of Masjid Al-Aqsa are
that it is:
- the station of al-Isra’
and al-Mi‘raj;
- the place where
hundreds of Messengers
of Allah are buried;
- the place where many
Companions are buried;
- a place where miracles
were shown by Allah’s
Will;
- a place which Allah
Himself calls a ‘blessed
place’;
- the place where angels
have descended with
Allah’s message;
- the only place on
earth where all the
Messengers of Allah
prayed at the same time
led by the Prophet
Muhammad;
- the only Masjid
mentioned by name in the
Holy Qur’an apart from
the Ka’bah. |

Message from the Ameer of
the Jamiatul Ulama |
We Owe
Them
Islam is alive and vibrant
in South Africa, perhaps in
a more comprehensive manner,
than most places in the
world. The Muslim community
is well-established in all
fields of political,
economic and social
activity. Madrassahs, Darul
Ulums, Muslim Schools and a
host of other Islamic
institutions exist, with
students from countries as
far and wide
as Ghana, USA, Singapore,
India, Pakistan and the
Middle East. In addition,
many Universities have
set-up Islamic
Studies Departments.
Religious organizations have
been in existence for a long
(such as the Jamiatul Ulama,
which was established in
1923) time and are
efficiently providing for
the needs of the community
in a variety of spheres.
Islamic literature pours
forth from South Africa to
the far corners of the
world, at an almost
immeasurable rate. Complete
Islamic Studies curricula
have been structured and
entire texts written by many
Islamic Educational
institutions, with these
curricula being used in many
countries. South African
Ulama have and continue to
serve Muslims around the
globe, from Chile to China,
USA, UK and Australasia. The
firm structure, activities
and contributions of the
South African Muslims is
recognized by all and
sundry.
How is it that a country
with a population as young
and small as the South
African Muslim community,
has come to be as successful
as they are?
The books of history record
that from the period of the
arrival of the first Muslims
in the Dutch period
throughout the history of
Muslims in South Africa,
various personalities have
made great efforts for the
preservation and practice of
our Deen. Personalities such
as Tuan Guru, Imam Haroon,
Mufti Sanjalvi, Maulana
Abdul Qadir, Maulana Umarjee
Rahimahumulla and numerous
others persevered with
blood, sweat and tears;
wealth, health and time
resulting in our position
today.
Maulana Yusuf Karan of
Strand, Maulana Qaseem Seema
of Newcastle, Maulana Ahmad
Hathurani of Johannesburg,
Maulana Yusuf Monia of
Mayfair and Maulana Ahmad
Garda of Pretoria are a few
of the few that can be
counted amongst the old
stalwarts of the struggle to
establish deen in South
Africa.
It is our duty and
responsibility to recognize,
appreciate and support their
contributions. We, the South
African Muslims make du`aa
that Allah Subhanahu wa
Ta`aala grant them a
healthy, long life and
reward them abundantly for
the great sacrifices that
they have made. Aameen.
