Sayyidina
Abu Hurairah
Radhiyallahu
anhu reports
that Rasoolullah
Sallallahu
alayhi wa sallam
said: "Whoever
stands in prayer
and worship on
this night of
Power, with
complete faith
and sincere hope
of gaining
reward, all his
previous sins
are forgiven." (Targhib,
Bukhari, Muslim)

Sayyidina
Anas
Radhiyallahu
anhu reports,
"Once when
Ramadhân
commenced the
Messenger of
Allâh (sallallahu
alayhi wa sallam)
said,
"A month has
verily dawned
over you wherein
lies a night
better than a
thousand months.
Whoever misses
such a night has
indeed been
deprived of all
that is good and
none is deprived
of it, except he
who is really
unfortunate". (Targhib,

The
Qurân-e-Karîm
refers to this
night in Surah
Qadr, in which
the rewards of
this auspicious
night is
mentioned. Allah
Ta’ala says this
night is better
than a thousand

Adoption?
The singer Madonna’s
‘adoption’ of a child
from Malawi raises many
questions. Her act
follows in the example
of other movie 'stars'
and personalities
involved in
‘high-profile adoptions’
of children from
'disadvantaged'
backgrounds.
Sure, Madonna has
contributed much towards
orphans in general and
also towards an
orphanage in Malawi. So
have many of the other
stars who have taken up
the cudgels of striving
to serve humanity and
serving in different
modes as ambassadors for
the procurement of the
humanitarian rights of
the less-fortunate.
No-one can, or even
should, judge whether
the actions of these
celebrities are genuine
acts of supporting
humanitarian causes.
However, certain
questions must be posed.
Can one consider their
actions to be equivalent
to that of purchasing
the
child with their
charities? If they
consider themselves to
be giving the child a
better prospect in life,
would they be correct in
their assumptions? Does
a
life of better financial
means necessarily mean a
better life; does a life
of a filled stomach mean
a life filled with moral
values and does entrance
and access to
prestigious institutions
constitute providing the
child with an education?
Would it be fair to
expose the child to
practicing a way of life
other than that which
his parents and family
are? Is the child being
‘liberated from
something and is there
something for the child
to be liberated from?
Or… does this whole
situation smell of a
condition of
pre-judgment and expose
a trend to consider
oneself, one’s
background and way of
life to be superior – a
trend seeped in racism
or other bias, prejudice
and bigotry?
In Madonna’s case, the
fact that the government
had to ‘bend the rules’
to allow her ‘adoption’,
and the fact that she
allowed the government
to do so, guides one to
re-examine her purpose,
aim and intent, and
morality? And, are not
the values of a person
most important when
considering a home for a
child – for the child to
be brought up in and
with?
Online
Casinos
There is a continuous
debate on the moral
condition and status of
our South African
society. There is also
constant deliberations
and contemplation on
how fast we are moving
towards becoming more
and more morally corrupt
and what the causes of
this sate of moral
emptiness and hollowness
is.
Among the many evils –
prostitution, abortion,
drug-abuse, alcoholism,
etc–
that have contributed to
the downward trend of a
value-empty, morally
bankrupt society in our
beloved country, one is
that of gambling.
Gambling is present in
many forms. Among them
are betting on horses,
casinos and the various
lotteries.
Online gambling, which
until recently, was
illegal in South Africa,
is now on
the cards. A draft
amendment bill will be
presented to the Cabinet
for approval. This bill
will be available for
public viewing by the
ned of October, and
should be passed by
April 2007. It is based
on a report the National
Gambling Board which
stated there was a need
to license and regulate
online gambling in South
Africa. It is
interesting to note that
even the United States
has criminalized online
gambling whereas, the
South African government
is legalising the
industry in an attempt
to regulate and control
it.
The dangers of Online
Gambling are extreme and
intense because of the
anonymity provided by
the concept. In addition
online gambling is
conducted using the
credit card allowing the
gambler to gamble using
money he doesn’t have.
If approved, it would
indeed be sad, since
this would only
contribute towards
increasing the many
problems that have
become so common today.
Crime
The crime situation is
already unbearable. Cash
in transit heists have
created war-like
scenarios in the street.
Innocent people are
killed in the
cross-fire. House
break-ins result in
deaths everyday. Rapes
are committed at will
and murder has become
the order of the day.
Last week a twenty-four
year old woman and her
two year old baby were
attacked, raped and shot
by a group of five men.
After appearing in
court, they were
released on R5000.00
bail. Is it fair? Do we,
as South Africans
(especially South
African Muslims) have a
responsibility to stand
up and do something?

Prophet's
Generosity |

Abdullah Ibn Abbas (Radhiallahu

“The Prophet was the most
generous of all the people,
and he used to become more
generous in Ramadan when
Jibra’eel Alayhis-Salâm met
him. Jibra’eel used to meet
him every night during
Ramadan to revise the Qur'an
with him. Allah's Apostle
then used to be more
generous than the fast
wind”. (Sahih Al-Bukhari

Q and A |
Question:
Does using an ear
bud nullify the fast?
|
Answer:
No, using an
ear bud
does not nullify the fast.
And Allah
Ta'aala knows best.
|
Question:
Can a Marhoom’s unpaid
Zakaah, Fidyah, Kaffaarah,
etc. be paid from
his estate?
|
Answer: If the Marhoom did
not make any Wasiyyah for
Zakaah, Fidyah, Kaffaarah,
etc. then these (Zakaah,
Fidyah, Kaffaarah, etc.)
cannot be fulfilled from the
estate prior to
distribution. However, once
the heirs have been
allocated their shares, they
may willfully and without
coercion donate in the
above-mentioned avenues on
behalf of the
Marhoom.
And Allah Ta'aala knows
best.
|
Question:
Does Zakaah have to be given
on monies one has saved up
for Haj? |
Answer: Yes, Zakaah has to
be
given on monies one has
saved up for Haj if the
money is in one’s possession
on the day when
Zakaat is due on him.
And Allah Ta'aala knows
best.

Summarized Jumu’ah Bayaan:
|
TAQWAH
“Oh you who Believe,
Fear Allah and speak
words of appropriate
justice”. (66:8)
The Best from amongst
you are those who have
the most taqwah (49:13)
“And we have instructed
those who were given the
scripture before you and
yourselves to have Taqwâ
(fear) of Allâh. But if
you disbelieve then to
Allâh belongs whatever
is in the Heavens and
whatever is on the
Earth. And ever is Allâh
free of need and
praiseworthy." (4:131)
Abî Umâmah reports: I
heard the Messenger of
Allâh (sallAllâhu alaihe
wa-sallam) giving a
sermon in the farewell
Hajj, saying, “Fear your
Lord, pray your five
prayers, fast the month
of Ramadân, pay your
Zakâh, and obey your
leaders, in doing so,
you will enter your
Lord‘s Paradise.” (Tirmidhi)
Abdullah Ibn Mas`ud (radiyallahu
anhu) said when speaking
about the statement of
Allâh: "O you who
believe, have Taqwâ
(fear) of Allâh, as you
should have of Him and
do not die except as
Muslims.” (3:102) .. is
that Allâh is meant to
be obeyed, and not
disobeyed; remembered at
all times, and not
forgotten; and to be
thanked, and we are not
to be ungrateful to
Him.”
• Taqwah is a something
Allah has commanded all
believers to instill and
develop within
themselves:
(66:8), (4:131), (3:102)
• Taqwah has been
described as a criterion
for obtaining the
guidance of Allah (2: 2)
• Taqwah has been
described as the
criterion for
establishing the
nobility and superiority
of people in the eyes of
Allah. (49:13)
• Taqwah bas been
mentioned as the purpose
of most ibaadah and also
most actions, including
fasting. (2:178).
• The converse of the
ibaadah contributing to
the establishment of
taqwah is equally true.
• Allah (subhanahu wa
ta`aala) has mentioned
many benefits for those
people who have taqwah.
Among them are:
• A perosn will obtain
guidance - "guidance for
the muttaqeen (the
people of taqwah)";
• The person with taqwah
will obtain the Help of
Allah - "Truly, Allah is
with the people who have
taqwah";
• He will be granted a
close friendship [with
Allah] - "Allah is the
close friend of the
muttaqeen";
• He will acquire the
Love of Allah - "Truly
Allah loves the
muttaqeen";
• His wrong actions will
be covered - "If you
have taqwah of Allah He
will make for you a
discrimination and He
will cover over for you
your wrong actions";
• Allah will provide for
those who have taqw a
way out of difficulty,
distress and unhappiness
- "Whoever has
taqwah of Allah He will
make a way out for him
and provide him from
where he does not
expect";
• Allah will provide for
the one with taqwah from
sources he does not
expect because of His
words - "Whoever has
taqwah of Allah He will
make a way out for him
and provide him from
where he does not
expect";
• Allah will
facilitatease in the
affairs of the person -
"Whoever has taqwah of
Allah He will make ease
for him in his affair";
• Allah will magnify the
rewards of a person with
taqwah - "Whoever has
taqwah of Allah He will
cover over his wrong
actions and magnify a
reward for him";
• The prson with
taqwah’s actions will be
accepted by Allah -
"Allah only accepts from
the people of taqwah";
• Allah will make
successful the person
with taqwah - "Have
taqwah of Allah in order
that you might succeed";
• He who has taqwah will
be given glad tidings
for this world and the
hereafter - "For them
there is good news in
this world and in the
next";
• The person with taqwah
will gain entrance into
paradise - "Truly, there
are for the people of
taqwah with their Lord
Gardens of bliss";
• The person with tawa
will be saved from the
fire of hell - "Then We
will save the ones who
had taqwah".
• Taqwah can be defined
as, ‘Consciousness or
awareness of the
Knowledge and of Allah
and Fear of the
displeasure or
displeasing Allah’. Some
refer to it as piety,
Fear of Allah, or
God-consciousness. One
scholar said, “Very
simply it is knowing
that whatever I am doing
Allah is aware of, and I
do not want to upset Him
in any way.”
A scholar writes that
there are ten things
that awaken one’s taqwah.
He says:
• Fear of punishment
in the next life;
• Fear [of punishment
in] this life;
• Hope of worldly
reward;
• Hope of the reward of
the next world;
• Fear of the reckoning;
• Shyness and
bashfulness before the
gaze of Allah, and this
is the station of
fearful watchfulness (muraqabah);
• Showing gratitude for
His blessings by obeying
Him;
• Knowledge, because of
His words, "They only
fear Allah, of His
slaves, the ones who
have knowledge";
• Exalting and honouring
His majesty, and it is
the station of awe;
• Sincerity in love
He also says that
there are five degrees
of taqawa, as follows:
• That the slave
should protect himself
from kufr (covering over
the truth), and that is
the station of Islam;
• That he should protect
himself from acts of
disobedience and
forbidden things, and it
is the station of
turning
or repentance (tawbah);
• That he should
protects himself from
doubtful matters, and
that is the station of
caution or carefulness (wara');
• That he should protect
himself from even those
things that are
permitted, and that is
the station of doing
without (zuhd);
• That he should protect
himself from the
presence of other than
Allah in his heart, and
it is the presence of
witnessing (mushahadah). |

Message from the Ameer of
the Jamiatul Ulama |
Mercy of Allah
Imagine that in a situation
of severe drought, a river
suddenly flows through the
midst of the people
suffering from the lack of
water. Imagine also that the
water of this river is
endless, clean and sweet.
Imagine the charge and rush
of all the people towards
the water.
Now, imagine the one who
sits back on his chair and
doesn’t scamper hastily
towards the water. He rather
prefers to sit and complain
about the drought, argue
about why and how it came
about and lament his
sorrowful position. Imagine
that, in this drunken
slumber he dies out of the
lack of water.
Would we not view such a
person as foolish, unwise,
idiotic and stupid? Would we
not blame him for his own
regretful outcome? Indeed,
would we not actually become
angry with his approach and
attitude?
Is it any wonder then, that,
as mentioned in the hadeeth,
Jibreel (alayhis salam) came
on the command of Allah and
issued forth despair upon
such people who are
fortunate to have witnessed
the month of Ramadan but did
not obtain the forgiveness
of Allah.
The month of Ramadan is an
ideal opportunity to drink
of the Mercy of Allah. There
are a few nights that
remain. Let us seek of the
Mercy of Allah.
May Allah grant us all, in
this month, His Maghfirah,
His Mercy, Freedom from the
Fire of Hell, Entrance into
Paradise and most of all,
His Pleasure. May He make it
possible for us to continue
the good that we engaged in,
in this month, throughout
the coming year and our
entire lives. Aameen.
