Who is
your friend then?
It is of very little
consequence entering
into debate on what the
Pope meant, exactly,
when he made the
statements that he made.
It is also pointless
expanding energy
discussing whether his
apology was exactly an
apology and whether he
meant to apologize.
What is significant for
us, as Muslims, is to
understand the
widespread sentiment
that has been implanted
and entrenched in the
minds of the world. A
mindset that is
portraying Islam in a
manner that is totally
non-reflective of Islam
and its principles; a
way of thinking that
attempts to make people
shocked, sickened and
revolted when they even
think of Islam or
Muslims; a line that
causes Muslims to be
harassed and made
unwelcome wherever they
may travel; a stance
that creates a phobia of
Islam and a manner that
justifies actions of
injustice, oppression
and aggression against
Muslim individuals,
communities and nations
because they are
postured to always be
the villain.
It is of paramount
importance that we
understand that this
mind-set is being
carefully implanted in a
most calculated way. It
is being done by way of
the manipulation of
events, via the media
and through various
means that we are hardly
aware of; and it is
being done by sinister
forces with deep, secret
agendas, hell-bent on
achieving their own
aims.
It is of vital
importance that we also
comprehend the depth and
the extent to which the
rot of such a mind-set
has extended and the
wide-ranging people who
are of similar opinion
and are being used to
influence the thinking
and actions of the
peoples of the world.
Let us not be fooled,
the enemies of Islam are
united in their effort
and attempt to
annihilate Islam.
Ramadaan is Here
On Sunday September 24
2006, Muslims in South
Africa would most
probably begin to
observe Ramadhan, the
month of fasting.
Fasting is a religious
obligation (Qur’an
2:183), it being the
fourth pillar of Islam.
On the eve of Ramadan,
the Jamiatul Ulama
wishes all Muslims a
blessed and fruitful
month of fasting and
ibaadah.
May we prosper in our
ibaadah and garner the
rewards promised to the
believers, by Allah.
Let us endeavor to
obtain the forgiveness
of Allah.
Let us drink of the
Mercy of Allah and gain
freedom from the fire of
Hell.
Let us fast, in the true
spirit of the month.
Let us do what we do
only for the pleasure of
Allah, and increase our
taqwa.
Let us hold tight onto
and embrace the Qur’aan
through it’s recitation,
understanding it,
practising upon it and
preaching it’s message.
Let us also remember to
show love and kindness
to all those around us.
Let us spend of what
Allah has given us, in
the causes He asks us to
spend.
It is of utmost
importance to make every
effort to abstain from
sin, of any type,
whatsoever.
May the Almighty guide
us in all that we do.
Aameen.

Summarized Jumu’ah Bayaan: |
|
CONDITIONS OF ZAKAAT:
Part III of IV |
Conditions of Nisaab
Passing of Hawl
A hawl, or one
complete Islamic
calendar year, should
pass with the wealth
being in possession by
its owner. This
condition is related to
livestock, money and
commercial commodities. |
|
|
Nisaab
Zakah should be paid on
any amount of growing
wealth that reaches what
is referred to as Nisaab.
Nisaab is that amount of
money/wealth, etc (in
excess
of one’s needs) which have been prescribed by shari`ah as the basic amount
which would make a
person liable for the
payment of zakah. If the
person is in need of the
money that he has, to
cover his basic needs,
then he is not required
to pay zakah. |
|
|
|
Holdings Subject to
Zakaat |
- Wealth
The zakah due on
cash moneys is one
quarter of a tenth
or two and one-half
percent (2.5%).
Included in cash
monies are cash,
monies in banks,
gold and silver,
investments, monies
owing, etc. There
are many verses on
the obligation of
zakah on cash
moneys. [e.g.
9:34-35]. In
addition, the
Prophet, sallallaahu
alayhi wasallam,
said, that the owner
of gold or silver
who does not pay the
zakah due on it
will, on the Day of
Resurrection, have
his treasure heated
in the Fire of Hell
and then made into
plates. His flanks,
forehead and back
will be branded with
them. Every time
they get cold, they
will be heated
again, on a day
that will last
50,000 (fifty
thousand) years.
This will be done to
him
until Allah
pronounces judgment
on His servants.
Then he will be
shown his path,
leading him either
to Paradise or to
Hell. (Bukhari and
Muslim)
|
|
|
- Trade and
Merchandise
Islam also has
prescribed zakah on
the wealth that a
merchant uses
for trade. Muslim
jurists paid great
attention to this
type of wealth
and wrote about it
under the category
of "trade goods."
These included
everything planned
for sale and all
purchases engaged in
with the purpose of
attaining a profit.
In order for trade
goods to be subject
to zakah, jurists
have established
specific conditions
that should be
fulfilled. The owner
should be in
complete possession
of
the goods, the goods
should constitute a
nisaab as determined
by
gold or silver and a
hawl should have
passed on these
goods. The zakah due
on all types of
trade goods is one
quarter of a tenth
or 2.5%.

Recipients of Zakaat
Those who are entitled
to receive zakah are
grouped into eight
categories,
as determined by the
Qur'an and Sunnah.
[9:60]. They are: The
Fuqaraa (the poor), The
Masaakeen (the very
poor), Mu`allafah al-Quloob
(for attracting
the hearts of those
inclined towards Islam
), Freeing Slaves, The
Wayfarer,
The Debtor, Those in
Allah's Cause, Zakaat
Collectors. (Various
conditions have been
attached by jurists for
each of theses
categories). |
|
|
Zakaat can not be
given to:
The Wealthy,
Disbelievers, Fathers,
sons and wives, The
family of Prophet
Muhammad (sallallaahu
alayhi wasallam). |

Sayyidina
Sa'd Radhiallahu anhu
narrates that Allah's
Messenger Sallallâhu 'alayhi

on the day that he eats
them." (Sahih Al-Bukhari

Q and A |
Q: Does zina of
the eyes and listening to
music, through
the medium of the TV, break
ones fast.
|
A: Although
Zina through the eyes, ears
and heart and
listening to music is Haraam
it will not break the fast
even
if these are perpetrated
through the agency of the
TV.
And Allah Ta'aala knows
best. |
Q: My wife is 7
months pregnant. Her 8th
month will start in Ramadan.
Is my wife excused from
fasting on pregnancy grounds
or does she has to fast for
the whole month? |
|
A: It will be
best in this case
that the pregnant mother
takes vitamin supplements as
well as nutritional foods
that would
boost her strength and
maintain her health as well
as that of the child. She
should not unnecessarily
avoid fasting.
Many pregnant mothers
achieve both the fasting as
well as carrying the child
in the womb
in a manner where they (both
mother and child) do not
become weak at all.
Nevertheless, if the mother
is
so weak that by fasting it
will harm her health or the
health
of the child then she will
be permitted not to fast. It
is best; in this case, that
she seeks medical advice
from a pious Muslim
physician/gynecologist.
In the case of not fasting,
she would then be required
to make good those missed
fasts by keeping them as
Qadha after Ramadhaan when
she gathers strength and
health.
And Allah Ta'aala knows
best. |

International Relief
Whilst the Jamiatul Ulama engages in and
considers emergency relief to be of great
importance, it has placed a larger emphasis
on education, rehabilitation and
empowerment. The projects embarked upon by
the Jamiatul Ulama are reflective of this
policy.
In response to the Tsunami in South-East
Asia as well as the Earthquake in the
Indo-Pak sub-continent, the Jamiat
coordinated the collection of funds in
Southern Africa. Some of these funds were
expanded in providing for the emergency
needs of the affected people. The Jamiat,
however, also embarked on some major
projects made possible through the
contributions of the larger community of
Southern Africa.
A Jamiatul Ulama delegation travelled to
Indonesia and India to formally hand over
some of the facilities developed to
rehabilitate, educate and empower the
people. The completed projects include:
Bandeh Aceh
A complete, fully-fledged village comprising
of 100 houses, masaajid, a boys school, a
girls school, a clinic and a community
center as well as other basic facilities.
The ceremony was attended by the governor of
Bandeh Aceh as well as a representative of
the South African embassy in Indonesia.
India 178 homes were built in two
localities. Education and other aspects of
rehabilitation were also focused on. Kashmir
40 complete homes were built. In addition
material was supplied for the reconstruction
of 200 homes.

Ramadan Programmes
Most Jamiat branches as well as local
masaajid arrange for educational programmes
on each Sunday of the month of Ramadan. The
Jamiatul Ulama helped coordinate the
organizing of many such programmes.
Brothers and sisters are urged to avail
themselves of the opportunity to broaden
their knowledge on various aspects of Islam,
by attending the programmes in their
respective areas.

Message from the Ameer of
the Jamiatul Ulama |
Reaping the Full Benefits of
Ramadân
Ramadan is a great
opportunity to draw from the
treasures of Allah. Numerous
benefits of Ramadan have
been mentioned. Among them
are:
1. It strengthens one's ties
with Allah and trains the
soul to observe duties of
devotion in accordance with
the teachings of the Qur'an
and Sunnah of the Prophet (pbuh).
2. It enforces patience and
determination in the Muslim
individual.
3. It promotes the principle
of sincerity by keeping the
Muslim away from arrogance
and showing off,
since it is an act between
the individual and his
Creator.
4. It promotes good
character, particularly
truthfulness and
trust-worthiness.
5. It encourages the Muslim
to do away with bad habits
and change his/her
circumstances for the
better.
6. It enhances generosity,
hospitality, and spending on
charitable causes.
7. It reinforces feelings of
unity and brotherhood among
Muslims.
8. It instills orderliness
and close observance of the
value of time.
9. It serves as an
opportunity for children to
perform acts of obedience
and to practice Islamic acts
of worship.
10. It offers a chance to
balance one's attention to
both physical and spiritual
needs.
Insha Allah, this month will
provide us all with the
opportunity to benefit in
this manner; the opportunity
to nourish our deen (Way of
life) and increase the noor
(light) in our hearts; the
opportunity to fortify
ourselves for the challenges
of today, tomorrow, the next
day, the next month, and
beyond.
Also remember that Ramadan
has a specific and definite
relationship as well as a
close connection with the
Qur’aan. Allah Subhanahu wa
ta'aala says:
“It is the month of
Ramadan in which the Quran
was revealed, a Guidance for
mankind with clear
teachings, showing the Right
Way, and a criterion of
truth and falsehood - (Qur’an
2:185).
Ramadan is the month of the
Quran and the Quran has four
rights over us: to
read/recite it; to
understand and act upon its
instruction and guidance; to
comprehend its teachings;
and to preach and convey its
message.
