Gaza and Lebanon
The onslaught on the
West Bank and Gaza,
code-named Operation
‘Summer Rain’, began on
the 25th of June, as an
operation to free a
single Israeli soldier
and has, to date, killed
more than 90
Palestinians, mostly
children and women. The
Israeli army destroyed
most of the
infra-structure in the
Gaza, bombing power
stations, roads, dams,
farms and sewage
systems. The situation
today includes
conditions where there
is no food, no power, no
drinking water and the
spread of sicknesses
associated with inhumane
living conditions. In
Lebanon, Operation ‘Just
Reward’ began, on the
12th of July, with the
aim of freeing two
captured Israeli
soldiers. In a period of
seven days more than 295
people have been killed
(of which only 26 were
not civilians) through
wave after wave of
deadly air raids. Most
of those killed were
civilians. Israel has
destroyed vital sectors
of the infrastructure
including roads, power
stations, airports, city
buildings and have made
major strikes on
residential areas.
Thousands are fleeing
Lebanon, food shortages
are reported, medical
supplies are dwindling,
more than 500 000 people
have already been
displaced and people are
holed up in their homes
or bomb-shelters.
Israel’s Army has now
set in motion a
‘limited’ ground
invasion. In the wake
of the senseless murder
and indiscriminate
killings perpetrated by
Israel, the lack of
objectiveness by the
media and the absence of
an open condemnation by
the leaders of the
‘civilised’ world is a
matter of grave concern.
The irresolute and
hesitant statements at
the G8 coupled with
indecisive measures
leads one to question
the integrity of the
‘leadership’ and their
objectiveness, when
dealing with Israel.
The inconsistencies
between Israel’s public
tale and its true
intents and goals cannot
be more conspicuous than
in the current
situation. The
frightening thing about
Israel’s actions are not
the actual completion of
it’s tasks but the
impunity with which it
does what it pleases,
it’s sheer indifference
to the opinion of the
world, and it’s total
lack of concern that the
people of the world are
aware of what is
happening. The media
continues to refer to
the Israeli incursions
as a ‘response’ to the
‘kidnapping’ of Israeli
soldiers. Israeli
justifications and
contexts are stated in
an attempt to brainwash
the populations of the
world into accepting
that Israel “has a right
to ‘defend’ itself”;
that its operation is
not ‘intended to harm’
the civilian population,
but to root out the
so-called terrorist
elements (Hizbullah);
and that Israel had
repeatedly ‘called upon
Lebanon to disarm’
Hizbullah.
If this was true, then
why did they bomb the
airport, fuel depots,
roads and why are so
many civilian deaths
recorded. If it was
indeed true, then why
attack the Lebanese
army. Lebanon has
repeatedly called for an
immediate cease-fire,
but world powers say
that any solution to the
crisis must begin
with the release of the
two soldiers, even
though Lebanon do not
hold these soldiers.
The truth is that
this entire chain of
events is a façade, an
act, a performance of
sorts designed to create
‘a window of
opportunity’ that
permits Israel to commit
its dastardly deeds,
aimed at establishing
itself as supreme and
unchallenged in the
Middle East. It is
designed to allow Israel
to gain control and
suppress those that exit
around them. It is
intended to provide an
environment where Israel
can push forward it’s
covert plans without the
focus of the world
falling on them. It
could very well be that
it is “creating the
perfect cover up for its
army bulldozers to
partition the rest of
the West Bank and
Jerusalem in accordance
with the second phase of
Olmert’s Disengagement
Plan — a plan which
intends to slice up the
West Bank into various
enclaves with no
physical continuity, and
place its population
under
an effective, long-term,
collective incarceration
in Bantustan-like areas,
to be allowed or denied
movement at the behest
of an Israeli solider.
The plan is being
actualized in record
time, yet few seem to
notice it. ”. (ArabNews
– 19/07/2006)
It is of no surprise
that the leaders of the
world at the G8 Summit
deemed it fit to issue a
non-committal statement
which provided a couched
sanction to Israel. The
support of Israel by the
G8 attendees is, in
effect, a sponsorship of
terrorism and genocide,
by the very people who
claim to be championing
the cause against
terrorism. Or maybe, the
‘war against terror’
does not include terror
by states or terrorist
states. To add insult to
injury other uninvolved
nations are implicated
by suggesting that
Hezbollah activities
were being orchestrated
by Damascus.
The United Nations
together with many
leaders call for
restraint and advocate
the introduction of a
multi-national force.
What was the UNIFIL
(United Nations Interim
Force in Lebanon – on
the border between
Israel and Lebanon) able
to achieve, except
selectively monitor the
on-goings on the Israel
Lebanon border? Would a
multi national force be
given the mandate to
create a no-fly zone
over Lebanon, and dare
say, would they be
allowed to enforce it in
any way. Or would this
force serve to only
further tie the hands of
those being beaten while
a bully continues to
dish out pain and
torment. |

Q and A |
Q: I recently converted to
Islam, also made nikaah
recently. One of my
wife’s cousins became
murtad and they
apparently tried to get
him to convert back but he
never did. Anyway, he passed
away; Are we as Muslims
allowed to attend
such a persons funeral?
Question: According to one
website, we cannot attend
his funeral and our
nikaah will be no longer
valid, as we would have
become murtad
ourselves. Is this true? |
A: Although we do not concur
with the view that by
attending such a funeral a
Muslim would be rendered an
murtad [apostate] and
his nikaah will
break, we feel very strongly
that Muslims should not
attend the funeral rites of
an apostate, showing the
great dislike that Islam has
for apostasy. This will
serve as a lesson to those
not attending as well as
persons that notice the
absence of the Muslim family
of the apostate and make
them realize the contempt
with which apostasy is
regarded in Islam.
And Allah Ta'aala knows
best. |
Q: Recently there was a
death
in our family. Could you
please inform me as to how
to engage in esale thawab
for
marhumeen.
I would also like
to know more about the 3,
10, 20 and 40 days ‘ziyarat’. |
|
A:
You may recite or give
charity and thereafter make
Dua to Allah Ta'aala that
the reward accrued therefrom
be passed onto those persons
you intend as the recipients
thereof.
In Islam, there are no
established rituals to be
performed at 10, 20, 30 or
40 days after a person
passes away. Yes, Islam has
permitted
Ta'ziyah [mourning] for a
period of 3 days only, from
the time a person has passed
away, and 4 months and 10
days for a
woman whose husband has
passed away.
And Allah Ta'aala knows
best. |

Summarized Jumu’ah Bayaan
|
|
The following is a press
statement issued by the Jamiatul
Ulama (Council of Muslim
Theologians) at the time when
Israeli forces continue to shower
bombs on Lebanon and Gaza. This
statement takes the place of our
normal Jumuah Bayaan and should
reach all, insha-Allah. |
|
PRESS STATEMENT
from the Jamiatul Ulama (Council of
Muslim Theologians) |
Israel holds the dubious record for
violating the most number of UN
resolutions, and holds the ‘repute’
of enjoying the most number of
American vetoes at the UN to endorse
its murderous conduct. Its
historical defiance of not only the
UN but also the International Court
of Justice displays the criminal
character and political depravity of
the Zionist regime.
It is strange that when Iraq flouted
UN resolutions, the world rallied
together, to pummel Iraq into
smithereens and overthrow its
government, yet Israel’s
unprecedented violation of
resolution after resolution is
greeted with muted expressions of
‘concern’ by the international
community.
Over the 40 years of illegal
occupation Israel has kidnapped
thousands of people; there are
hundreds of Gilad Shalits
languishing in Israeli jails,
mercilessly persecuted and detained
without trial. Israel previously
invaded Lebanon in 1978 and 1982,
and killed close to 30,000 Lebanese
and Palestinian refugees. Gilad
Shalit is but a miserable pretext
for the violent expropriation of
Muslim lands and its eventual
incorporation into the Zionist
state, thus fulfilling its obscene
dream of the ‘Greater Israel’.
Israel’s indiscriminate murder of
civilians, its callous destruction
of the infrastructure of an entire
country in absolute defiance of
international law is immoral and
barbaric. Israel's brilliant
columnist, Gideon Levy poignantly
laments this barbaric aggression in
the following words: "It is not
legitimate to cut off 750,000 people
from electricity. It is not
legitimate to call on 20,000 people
to run from their homes and turn
their towns into ghost towns. It is
not legitimate to kidnap half a
government and a quarter of a
parliament. A state that takes such
steps is no longer distinguishable
from a terror organization.”
Inside occupied Palestine we see
severe repression in Gaza and the
West Bank, a kind of ‘animalization’
of the Palestinian people, reducing
them to subsistence level. Gaza has
now become virtually a ghetto, a
walled prison for 1.1 million
Palestinians. Israel has been
shelling Gaza, has imposed a
blockade its population, denying
medical supplies, causing food
shortages and starvation. Israel is
imposing collective punishment on
the civilian population of Gaza.
Israel is clearly guilty of war
crimes!
Israeli warplanes not only violate
Syrian airspace, it still illegally
occupies territory belonging to
Syria, Palestine and Lebanon. It is
clear from recent events that as
long as the illegal occupation of
Arab lands in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan
and Palestine continue, the violence
in the Middle East will persist.
Israel must be forced to stop its
continued aggression! Why does the
international community condemn
attempts by countries to acquire
nuclear weapons, EXCEPT in the case
of Israel? Why do they condemn the
targeting of civilians during armed
conflicts, EXCEPT if this is done by
Israel?
Hizbullah and Hamas, albeit on a
much smaller scale, are only
responding to what the oppressor has
been meting out to them for years
and years on end!
The Jamiatul Ulama unequivocally and
explicitly condemns the Israeli
military offensive in Gaza and
Lebanon. It considers these actions
to be in breach of international
regulations as established by the
International Community through the
agency of the United Nations. The
violent manner in which Israel has
conducted itself, the destruction of
basic infrastructure and the
indiscriminate killings constitute
severe crimes against humanity.
The International Community must
take strong steps against Israel in
this regard. Muslim Nations are
obliged to openly condemn the
destruction and mayhem caused by
Israel and initiate strong measures
for tough action against Israel.
Muslims around the world need to
make their voices heard and call
upon their elected leaders, and
their respective governments to take
a decisive stand against the present
massacres.
The Muslim Communities must to turn
to Allah, in their daily lives and
actions. They are called upon to
engage in prayer, as individuals (in
du’aa) and collectively (in the form
of performing the qunut-al-naazilah
in their masaajid).

Muslim Community's Meeting with
Government Officials
Last week, four members of the
Jamiatul Ulama formed part of a
group of 60 Muslims representatives,
from across the country and from
various organisations, which met
with various ministers, including
the Minister in the Presidency,
Essop Pahad, Ministers of
Intelligence and Home Affairs, and
the Deputy Ministers of Foreign
Affairs, Justice and Education.
The meeting was extremely productive
and a press statement jointly issued
expressed, among others, the
following:
The purpose of the meeting was to
discuss the perception that Muslim
institutions and leading Muslim
leaders could possibly be subjects
of investigation, surveillance and
security concerns by the state.
The meeting included candid
deliberations and the Muslim
Leadership was given the assurance
that there was no security policy
directed specifically at the Muslim
Community and its leaders.
In response to questions regarding
the deportation of foreign
nationals, the government delegation
also emphasized that it was opposed
to ‘renditions’ and remained
committed to following due legal
process.
It was resolved to establish a
mechanism for better communication
and liaison between the government
and the Muslim community.
The meeting also focused on the
Middle East crisis and a discussion
concluded with the government and
the Muslim delegation unequivocally
expressing their condemnation of the
current Israeli military offensive,
both in Gaza and Lebanon. |

Message from the Ameer of
the Jamiatul Ulama |
|
Ad-Deen An-Nasihah
The essence of Islam is “Ad-deen
an-nasihah.” (Religion is good
counsel). This hadith pertains to
matters affecting our spiritual life
and the hereafter. It also covers
worldly matters such as earning a
livelihood, studying, giving a
marriage recommendation, our
impression of others and a host of
other matters. Indeed it affects
every area of our life.
The hadith can be found actively
demonstrated in the lives of the
illustrious Sahabah, whose character
was in fact, a reflection, of the
character of none other than our
beloved Nabi Muhammad (sallallahu
‘alaihi wa sallam). The sahabah, as
a whole, demonstrated this high
degree of character to the world,
and this is why the world quickly
embraced Islam, and was positively
influenced by it.
It is important to always have an
exemplary, before us, from whose
life we can take examples and be
constantly guided to the straight
path. There are many pious people in
the world today to whom we can align
ourselves to in order to preserve
our imaan and take good counsel
from. Such people are living
examples and an inspiration to all;
their mere presence in our lives
makes it such that it becomes
difficult for us to deviate from the
straight path. By associating with
such people we will be identified
with those who are pious and
Allah-fearing on the day of
judgement.
Middle East Conflict
The situation in the Middle East has
reached epic proportions. Needless
to say, Israel has been allowed to
condemn it’s victims to untold
sufferings. The media has reported
selectively. The world has become
insensitive to tragedy and mayhem,
and has stood by simply observing
from the sidelines.
We must repent for our sins, correct
our actions and beg Allah to
alleviate the sufferings of the
oppressed.
It is also important that we stand
up and be counted and assist in any
way possible.
