Muslim AIDS Awareness Programme

The Religious AIDS Programme (RAP) is a state-aided project developed for the purpose of creating AIDS awareness and for developing strategies for AIDS prevention. RAP has representatives from the various religious groups within South Africa in order to promote this programme. The Jamiatul Ulama (Transvaal), the Islāmic Medical Association (Gauteng Regional Committee) and the Islāmic Careline have been authorised by RAP, to promote the Muslim Aids Awareness Programme. This joint project requires the co-operation of various role players in our society. These include schools, big businesses, and the general public.

The programme envisages the development of Islāmic literature for the prevention of the AIDS epidemic that is engulfing the world. The starting premise of this programme is the fact that the Islāmic value system and moral code is the only avenue available towards stemming the tide of HIV/AIDS.

Muslim youth are particularly at risk. It is for this reason that the Muslim AIDS Awareness Programme, intends to embark on a major awareness project directed at this segment of our community. The programme would include a component on life-skills that would afford youth the opportunity to make choices for their future, based essentially on Islāmic principles. Knowledge is the best weapon against destruction and it teaches responsible behaviour.

We look forward to the support of the community in this regard.

To The President

Below is the abridged text of a letter sent to the President's office from the Jamiat. The office of the President has acknowledged receipt of the letter.

Your romantic link with Mrs. Machel, to put it lightly, is indeed unbecoming for a person of your stature and the leader of the nation. It goes without saying that, your stature projects you as a role model and many admirers will emulate your conduct.

Your continued relationship impacts negatively on the institution of marriage, especially in an age when this institution is threatened primarily by succumbing to lewd behaviour. Many of the world's ills can be attributed to the wanton abandonment of marriage.

We implore, that if there is sufficient compatibility between yourselves, that you walk the aisle of matrimonial bliss and be blessed.

Tālimi Board

The Jamiat has embarked on the revision of its syllabi in 1997. One of the unique features of this revised syllabus is the inclusion of charts. To date 23 Fiqh charts for classes 1-5 have been prepared and 43 Fiqh charts for classes 6 - 8.

The committee also prepared 40 du‘ā charts. All these charts are laminated and serve as an invaluable aid in the classroom. The Tālimi Board is at presently preparing aids for the teaching of history.
