Ulama of Africa Meet in Casablanca |
A member of the Jamiat, together with a delegation from the MJC attended a conference held in Casablanca at the invitation of the Moroccan Embassy. One hundred and fifty Ulama from 23 African countries attended the conference. The rich diversity of participants provided an excellent to opportunity to exchange ideas and foster ties of brotherhood. The theme of the conference centred on the dynamics of the Friday sermon and its relevance to the contemporary society. The conference was held at the famous Hasan al-Thanie Masjid and was inaugurated by the Minister of Endowments and Islāmic Affairs of Morocco. Freedom of speech in Muslim countries was a concern echoed by many participants at the conference. It ended with a resolution to make the Jumuah a more vibrant, more relevant and effective spiritual gathering of the Ummah. It also reiterated the need to maintain Arabic as the language of the mimbar. |
Delegates were also taken on a tour of the city of Fez, the university of Qarawein and the tomb of Sheikh Tjani.
