The Jamiatul Ulama South Africa strongly condemns the fresh attacks Israel has launched on besieged Gaza Strip as a blatant display of impunity and a total disregard for human life.

The toll of casualties sustained behind the thundering sounds of aerial missiles is already running in the double digits. The suffering which these fresh assaults are creating on the on the besieged Gaza Strip is cumulative on the territory still recovering from Operation Cast Lead of 2008 and increasingly unbearable.

It should be pointed out that the context of the current crisis remains the continued illegal occupation of Palestinian lands now nearing 7 decades.

A PRESS STATEMENT
(for immediate release)

We have learnt with shock of the death of eight of fellow South Africans in an attack on a van in Kabul earlier today. Our hearts are with the families and friends of all those who have lost their lives in this attack.

Their deaths remind us of the continued cycle of violence in Afghanistan under occupation. It is also a bitter reminder of the reality of Afghanis whose society is being decimated on a daily basis, in the name of ‘War on Terror.’

Though Hezb-i-Islami has claimed responsibility of this deadly attack as an act of revenge against release of a blasphemous movie about the Prophet of Islam, there cannot be certainty about this motive. Afghanistan has become a country where such attacks are a common occurrence.

On Tuesday, gunmen stormed the US consulate in Benghazi reportedly killing Washington’s envoy to Libya alongside three others. In Cairo, a group of people scaled the walls of the US embassy, ransacking it and pulling down that nation’s flag flying at the building.

As news reports have it, public protests have now spread to Tunisia, Sudan, Yemen, Lebanon, Iran, Iraq and as far as Bangladesh.

A somewhat obscure film Innocence of Muslims, aimed at provoking Muslims, has come onto the limelight through these consulate and embassy attacks in Libya and Egypt respectively.

The Jamiatul Ulama South Africa has noted with dismay a news report that the migrant communities of Mayfair and surrounding areas have received threats of „war.‟

The Mail & Guardian newspaper, through its online edition, carries a story (dated 3 Sep 2012) by Faranaaz Parker, about a group calling itself South African Blacks Association (SABA), which has been issuing letters of threats of violence against foreign nationals.

According to the news report, confirmed by community leaders in the area, SABA has „distributed pamphlets in the area – slipped into letter boxes and posted on lampposts – “declaring war” against refugees and warning foreigners that “we are coming for you”.‟

It is our view that such threats represent misplaced hostility from a section of society towards vulnerable communities seeking refuge in our country.

Profile

The Jami'atul 'Ulamâ South Africa was established in 1923 as Jamiatul Ulama Transvaal (JUT) to service the religious needs of the Muslims.

It was originally founded by Moulana Mohammed Waliullah (R.A.) but was later revived by Moulana Muhammad Mia (RA) and Mufti Ebrahim Sanjalvi (RA).

Many 'Ulamâ, too numerous to mention, spent their lives serving Islam and the Muslims through the Jami'atul 'Ulamâ Transvaal.

As the needs of the Muslim community grew, the JUT correspondingly responded. It was in the 1980s, that more branches and representatives were needed to service the ever-growing and geographically diverse Muslim population.

Alhamdulillâh, today the Jamiatul Ulama South Africa has six fully operational branches and six zonal representatives operating in six of the nine provinces in South Africa.
